Sex: Female
Age: 28

Occupation: Writer // Assistant at Comedy Central

Mixtape Name: Obsessions

Side A
1) Ram On by Paul McCartney

4) Jesse by Carly Simon
5) Beast of Burden by The Rolling Stones
6) Hey Ya by Outkast

Side B
7) Long John Blues by Dinah Washington
8) Let’s Spend the Night Together by David Bowie
9) Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush
10) Teeth by Lady Gaga
11) Another Day by Paul McCartney
12) Me & Liza by Rufus Wainwright

Bonus Track (since it’s not on Spotify): I Can’t Wait for Christmas to Come by The Loose Tapestries

Liner Notes: “Life is nothing if you’re not obsessed.” – John Waters

Confession: I’ve basically only been listening to podcasts and Paul McCartney’s Ram for the last year or so. Instead of hiding this (possibly) worrying behavior, I’m going to embrace it… with a playlist full of my musical obsessions.

Side A is a sampling of my current favorites. These are the songs that I just can’t get out of my head. Note: “Hey Ya” is just as delightful now as it was in 2003, when I was trying to avoid my homecoming date and only came out of hiding to dance to this song. (Sorry, Steven.)

I’m so obsessed with the songs on Side B that I’ve actually put them into plays I’ve written. From singing “Long John Blues” in my one-woman show Sprinkles & Shame at the Playground Festival at Carnegie Mellon to the current play I’m dreaming up about Liza Minnelli and Bianca Jagger being disco friends, these songs have inspired me in countless ways.

Bonus: Is it weird to listen to a Christmas song in June? This one is too delightful to be confined to a calendar. Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno and Mighty Boosh comedian (and my imaginary boyfriend) Noel Fielding teamed up to create a surrealist Christmas song that features a rap from Idris Elba. I’m swooning.

My Mixtape Monday – March 23, 2015

First Name: James
Twitter: @pghtacotruck
Sex: Male
Age: 43

Occupation: Taco Truck Owner

Mixtape Name: Average Day at Work Mix

Side A
1) Hell Yes by Beck
2) Fingerbib by Aphex Twin
3) Future by Cut Copy
4) 45:33 (Padded Cell Remix) by LCD Soundsystem
5) Age of Consent by New Order
6) Hanging Gardens by Classixx

Side B
7) (I Keep On) Rising Up by Mike Doughty
8) Big Mama’s Door by Alvin Youngblood Hart
9) Pressure Drop by Toots and the Maytals
10) Heroes by David Bowie
11) Sweet Child Of Mine by Luna
12) Be Thankful For What You’ve Got by William DeVaughn

Liner Notes: Side A is largely electronic and upbeat and some of my favorite songs to start working to. 25 years ago I worked in a food trailer in college and listened to a lot of electronic acts, New Order being one, so there’s a memory connection there.

Side B are all pretty solid favorites of mine that have strong lyrical messages for me, that keep me going throughout the day. I can’t cook without music, I can’t work without music. Now we have bluetooth and iphones, but 25 years ago I’d show up to work with half a dozen cassette tapes and a couple C batteries.

My Mixtape Mondays – August 19, 2013

First Name: Beth
Twitter: @bethquevli
Sex: Female
Age: 41

Mixtape Name: I Was Born Ten Years Too Late

Side A
1) The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack
2) Sara Smile by Hall and Oates
3) Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell
4) Deacon Blues by Steely Dan
5) Never Going Back Again by Fleetwood Mac
6) Ventura Highway by America

Side B
7) Going to California by Led Zepplin
8) The Air That I Breathe by The Hollies
9) Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
10) Space Oddity by David Bowie
11) Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull
12) Maggie Mae by Rod Stewart

Liner Notes: I listen to all kinds of music, and lots of it, but my absolute favorite music came out of the 1970s (and, okay, the late 1960s). Singers & Songwriters, Classic Rock, cheesy one hit wonders you find on those Time-Life compilations – this era totally reflects my musical happy place.

I picked these songs because every one of them has one of those nearly perfect moments that remind me why I love music every time I listen to it. The hardest choice may have been which Steely Dan song to pick. Donald Fagen ***swoon***

My Mixtape Mondays – August 12, 2013

Age: 35 y/o

Occupation: Paramedic

Mixtape Name: Mixed-up MixTape

Side 1
1) Where Did You Sleep Last Night by Nirvana
2) Lover You Should Have Come Over by Jeff Buckley
3) Tangled Up in Blue by Bob Dylan
4) Bad Reputation by Joan Jett
5) Birdhouse in Your Soul by They Might Be Giants
6) Stick Shifts and Safety Belts by Cake

Side 2
7) Sabotage by the Beastie Boys
8) Cocaine Blues by Johnny Cash
9) Broken Crown by Mumford and Sons
10) King Bitch by David Bowie
11) Little Plastic Castle by Ani Defranco
12) Far Away Eyes by The Rolling Stones

Liner Notes: After being asked to put together a mix tape I racked my brains with a theme. Should it be autobiographical? Should it be a retro playlist from the Class of ‘95? Should it be my favorite top 12 songs? Since music has always been a strong influence in my life how do I pick my favorite 12?

It’s like picking your favorite child, or flavor of ice cream. So after some soul searching, I decided to let my computer do the work. I don’t keep any songs that I don’t like in my library, so I’m bound to like the list that is randomly generated. So yeah, I cheated and took the easy way out.
