Liner Notes: While packing and prepping for my honeymoon in Hawaii I thought it would be a fantastic idea to base my mixtape on the playlist I crafted for my wedding this past summer.

In true DIY punk spirit I couldn’t justify hiring a DJ for my wedding. Music helped bring my wife Kim (@kimmypoooo) and I together (I messaged her on MySpace because she had the Bouncing Souls and Against Me! in her profile), so it had to play a vital role in our wedding. I spent weeks scouring our record collections and searching the web to create the perfect playlist for our wedding. Life tip, never google “indie wedding music” the results are a mix of radio friendly rustic pop and a thousand suggestions to have your first dance to “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds – which is a great song, but at least three of your friends have already laid claim to it.

Our wedding was very non-conventional, it was essentially an outdoor BBQ with our families and friends. Going against all traditions Kim suggested we walk down the aisle together to the uplifting Arcade Fire anthem “Wake Up”. As we stood at the pavilion’s makeshift altar tears of joy ran down my face as I quoted the Weakerthans’ “The Reasons” in my vows: “I know you might roll your eyes at this / but I’m so glad that you exist” (FYI: My vows also borrowed lyrics from Notoroious B.I.G.).

While our guests feasted on ribs, pulled pork, and cornbread we cued an eclectic mix of casual songs including “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” by the Talking Heads and the charming Chairlift tune “I Belong In Your Arms Tonight.” What may come as a surprise to those who know me is that Kim actually picked Weezer’s “Falling For You” to soundtrack our first dance! Since our engagement my mother had been looking forward to the mother and son dance, I went “Loves Me Like A Rock” by Paul Simon, an upbeat danceable track that we would both enjoy.

The hardest part about being at DJ at your own wedding is feeling the crowd and playing the right tracks. Luckily I knew my friends very well and got people to the dancefloor with “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone. I kept people on their toes with the “Ça Plane Pour Moi” by Plastic Bertrand. The highlight of the evening came when I faded “Ignition (Remix)” by R. Kelly into Harvey Danger’s “Flagpole Sitta.” Everyone rushed to the center of the dancefloor with beers held high belting the lyrics from this 90s one hit wonder.

Keeping the energy high I dropped “The House That Heaven Built” by the Japandroids, which started a small circle pit. With everyone drunk on our favorite craft beers it was time to wind down and say goodnight to those who came to celebrate our wedding with us. It was a no brainer to close with “All My Friends” by our favorite band LCD Soundsystem.
